Interior Minister Fatmir Xhafaj received today the Special Ambassador and Counter Terrorism Coordinator at the US Department of State, Nathan A. Sales.
Minister Xhafaj thanked Sales and the US Government for the assistance and expertise given to the State Police and law enforcement agencies in the field of law enforcement in Albania. In the focus of the work of the United States and the State Police are, among other things, issues of the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, for which a very good relationship with American partners is built and functioning. The Interior Minister recognized the senior US official with the Albanian party’s strategy to prevent violent extremism through a new relationship built between the police and the community.
The Sales Coordinator said that terrorism as a global challenge requires a concerted and global commitment and response. He stated that between the two countries has a close co-operation relationship over the years in the area of law enforcement and prosecution, as well as holding under control of alleged elements involved in wars in third countries or acts of terror. Albania, despite having a low number of foreign fighters involved in conflicts abroad, remains in the lead of DASH, an important partner in the region in this regard.
The focus of the conversation was also management and border security. The Minister presented the achievements and needs with regard to the enhancement of technological capacities related to the better management and processing of information, especially those involved in illegal activities, the need for more dedicated assistance and training in this area, the presentation of new systems and interaction issues between them, all in the function of preventing, identifying extremist and terrorist individuals. Xhafaj added that the US contribution has been crucial to the successes achieved.
Sales Coordinator underlined that cooperation with Albania in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism will serve as a cornerstone for the continuation of this close relationship in the future as well.
