Mediators are working on an interim agreement that would stop military clashes and ease navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, while Washington warns that military operations will continue.
Mediators between the United States and Iran have floated the possibility of a 10-day ceasefire, with the aim of reducing tensions between the two countries and creating the conditions for a return to negotiations, sources familiar with the talks report.
According to them, the proposal envisages not only a temporary cessation of hostilities, but also the lifting of restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important sea routes for global oil trade. In recent days, Iran has fired on merchant ships trying to pass through the strait, while the administration of President Donald Trump has re-established a naval blockade of Iranian ports.
The White House did not confirm whether it is willing to accept a ceasefire, but acknowledged that diplomatic channels remain open.
" President Trump is focused on making Iran pay for its violations of the memorandum of understanding and for its ongoing terrorist acts in the Strait of Hormuz ," a US official said.
He added that the US president is also determined to hold Tehran accountable for the deaths of American soldiers during the recent attacks.
" These strikes will continue until the president decides otherwise, but talks between the two countries continue ," the official said.
Earlier in the day, Trump vowed revenge for the killing of American soldiers, including two members of the armed forces who lost their lives after an Iranian attack on a US base in Jordan.
Even before this incident, the US president had been considering options to increase military pressure on Iran. The US has already sent additional fighter jets and air-to-air tankers to the region in anticipation of a possible escalation of the conflict.
Throughout the crisis, Qatar and Pakistan have played a key role in mediating between the parties, trying to avoid further escalation and restore diplomatic dialogue.
