Parliament begins, opposition boycotts session; building is armored by police

The plenary session began in the absence of Democratic Party deputies, who boycotted the proceedings, while the agenda was accompanied by debates on the rejected interpellations.

Today's plenary session began in the absence of Democratic Party MPs, who boycotted parliamentary proceedings. The opposition was represented only by Opportunity Party MPs Erald Kapri and Redi Muçi.

In today's session, a series of draft resolutions are scheduled for review to assess the activity of independent institutions during 2025, as well as discussions on issues raised by voters.

Among the main items on the agenda are draft resolutions for the evaluation of the work of the Central Election Commission (CEC), the High Inspectorate for the Declaration and Control of Assets and Conflict of Interest (HILACI), as well as the Bank of Albania for the year 2025.

MPs will also review the annual reports of the Financial Supervisory Authority (AMF), the Institute of Statistics (INSTAT), the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority (AKEP), the Albanian Radio and Television (RTSH), the Audiovisual Media Authority (AMA), the Energy Regulatory Authority (ERE) and the Water Regulatory Authority.

Meanwhile, increased security measures have been put in place around the Parliament building. Numerous police forces and armored vehicles have been deployed in the area, although organizers have not announced any protests today.

At the opening of the session, the Speaker of the Parliament, Niko Peleshi, announced that the request of the Opportunity Party to hold an interpellation regarding the issues of Zvërnec and Rrjoll had not been accepted.

"An interpellation has also been requested for Zvërnec and Rrjoll. These are issues that have been discussed many times and therefore there cannot be a new request based on the same subject. The request for an interpellation has not been accepted," Peleshi declared.

Following this announcement, the MP of the Opportunity Party, Erald Kapri, accused the majority of violating the functioning of the Parliament and preventing the opposition from exercising its parliamentary rights.

According to Kapri, requests for interpellations and question-and-answer sessions have been unfairly rejected, while he also demanded accountability for the situation in the State Police and the increased presence of law enforcement near the Parliament.

"You have turned this parliament into a cesspool. Only today we were informed, with your letter to the Speaker, that our requests for interpellation have all been canceled by you. How can you so violently violate the Constitution? This is not a parliament. If you call this a parliament, I don't know what else I can say. What we wanted to raise in this interpellation with the Minister of the Interior, who apparently spends his time attacking honorable individuals who speak for the host and protect citizens and does not deal with the State Police, which has gone off the rails of the law. A State Police, which, as I was coming to Parliament, had surrounded the entire Parliament with blindfolds and police officers. Why? Because you were scared of eggs. How can the Minister of the Interior not be asked about this matter," declared Kapri.

The plenary session continues with the review of the agenda items, while the Democratic Party deputies are absent from the Assembly hall.
