A tragic event has shocked the sports community in Ireland and Albania. Albanian athlete Anila Muçaj, originally from Salaria e Tepelena, lost her life in a car accident in Ireland, two days ago.
The accident occurred on Sunday morning in Tralee, Ireland, when the 48-year-old Albanian woman was running with her two friends on a narrow road, known for activities such as running, cycling and walking, according to foreign media.
The other two people received minor injuries, while the elderly man driving the SUV ended up in the hospital.
Muçaj was a member of the Tralee-based Born to Run club and was a keen athlete, having participated in a number of marathons in recent years.
A post on the club's social media said: "Today we are devastated by the tragic news that our beautiful, good friend Anila has passed away following an accident, our prayers are with her husband and two beautiful sons and with Anila's entire family at this time. We also pray for Klara and Klara who ran with Anila to make a full recovery, our thoughts are with all the families this evening."
"Anila was a kind, caring, beautiful person and put everyone else first," said one citizen.
Tralee Mayor Mikey Sheehy (FF) said at Monday morning's Tralee Municipal District meeting that Anila's death on a beautiful Sunday morning while out jogging was "a huge shock" to the town.
According to reports, the driver of the vehicle, an 80-year-old man, had medical problems and lost control of the vehicle, causing the fatal crash. Anila Muçaj, a mother of two, was treated at the scene and immediately taken to hospital, but could not survive the impact.
The driver of the vehicle was also taken to the hospital, where his condition was considered non-life-threatening.
