Archbishop Anastasios Janullatos passed away this morning at the age of 96 in Athens. His body will be laid to rest in Albania as this was a legacy of the Archbishop for the decades he spent in our country. He was installed as the head of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church in 1992.
It is also a rule of the Autocephalous Church that Archbishops are laid to rest in the place where they served and not in their place of birth.
Meanwhile, the Holy Synod is expected to meet to determine the details and make decisions regarding the funeral ceremony.
Archbishop Anastasios Yanullatos passed away after several weeks of hospitalization at Evangelismos Hospital in Athens, where he had been urgently transported from Tirana. He was hospitalized and intubated in the Intensive Care Unit, following surgery on the afternoon of Friday, January 10.
Janullatos was unable to survive the critical hours despite attempts to remove him from intubation and the efforts of the medical staff, as a result of the insufficient functioning of many organs.
