21 countries condemn Israel's new plan in the West Bank, Meloni also

A group of 21 countries, including the United Kingdom and France, have strongly condemned the Israeli government's decision to build a major new settlement project in the occupied West Bank.

In a joint statement, the countries called the plan to build about 3,400 homes “unacceptable” and “a clear violation of international law.” According to them, this project would cut Palestinian territory in two, jeopardizing the geographical continuity of a future Palestinian state. “We condemn this decision and strongly demand its immediate withdrawal,” the statement said.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also reacted against the plan, describing it as a serious risk to the prospect of peace.

"Italy condemns the Israeli decision to authorize new settlements in the West Bank. This decision violates international law and risks definitively undermining the two-state solution and, more broadly, any political perspective for a just and lasting peace," Meloni said.

She also expressed concern about developments in the Gaza Strip, calling the Israeli occupation a "further escalation" following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which is further worsening the humanitarian crisis.

Instead of escalation, according to Meloni, "a collective commitment to achieving a ceasefire, the release of hostages and the strengthening of international efforts to guarantee urgently needed humanitarian assistance for Palestinian civilians" is necessary.

"Italy will continue to support international mediators and is ready to make its contribution in a post-conflict scenario," she said.
