Hope for survivors remains alive in Venezuela, days after the devastating earthquakes that struck the country. In the city of La Guaira, dozens of families continue to stand near collapsed buildings, waiting for a miracle.
One of the most moving stories is that of Andreina Valerios, who believes her almost two-year-old son, Santiago, is still under the rubble. She says she continues to hear his cries and has not lost faith that he can be saved.
Andreina was at work when the earthquake struck. When she rushed back to the apartment where her son was staying, along with her partner Ramsés Mendoza and other family members, the building had completely collapsed.
"I still have faith that my son is alive. I have faith that he is the one I hear crying. I know that my son will get through this, and so will his family," she said.
Other relatives also claim to have heard cries for help from under the rubble. Samuel Mendoza said that a day after the earthquake he heard a woman's voice, while Andreina later heard the cries of a baby. According to them, several people are still trapped in the building, including children.
Among them are nine-year-old Lucas and three-year-old Aranza, who are suspected to still be under the rubble.
Meanwhile, rescue teams from El Salvador and Spain have joined the operation in La Guaira, but so far have not managed to penetrate the collapsed building or extract any survivors.
According to Venezuelan authorities, more than 1,400 buildings have been destroyed in the state of La Guaira alone. Search and rescue operations are being carried out in difficult conditions due to a lack of equipment and resources, while residents and volunteers continue to dig through the rubble in the hope of saving their loved ones.
