Democratic primaries reward the most radical wing. Now the party fears a boomerang effect in the midterm elections...
They campaigned against ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement). Of course. And against any kind of deportation. That was to be expected. They also promised significant cuts to law enforcement, especially the police. On the issue of immigration, they supported easier citizenship and voting rights for non-residents. Furthermore, they proposed tax increases for the wealthy, the elimination of private health insurance, and state funding for transgender treatment.
Among them are those who have described the United States as a "damned disaster." There are also those who have wiped their dirty hands on the American flag with the excuse that they "forgot their napkins."
But if until yesterday they were simply divisive elements within the Democratic Party, which has increasingly shifted to the left, today they have become almost its official face. On Tuesday evening, in New York, three candidates supported by Zohran Mamdani convincingly won the Democratic primary elections for Congress. A victory that, on the one hand, strengthens the political influence of the mayor within the party and, on the other, increasingly transforms the symbol of the Democrats into a socialist and increasingly less democratic force.
Victory of candidates supported by Mamdani
The figure who stands out most under the support of Mamdani, the first Muslim mayor of New York, is Darializa Avila Chevalier, a woman originally from the Dominican Republic, converted to Islam, who defeated veteran Adriano Espaillat, the leader of the Hispanic Caucus in Congress.
At the center of her campaign were, among other things, the war in Gaza and, of course, the Palestinian cause. Two years ago, together with other students, she participated in protests at Columbia University against Israeli military operations. Not only that. In 2023, she also protested in Times Square, in an activity that was criticized by the entire Democratic Party, as the rally used rhetoric that, according to critics, justified the attacks of October 7.
But some positions much more left-wing than Mamdani's own also attracted great attention, such as demands for the abolition of the police, borders, and prisons, and even the confiscation of the properties of real estate owners.

Kundërshtari i saj ishte Antonio Reynoso, jo një politikan i moderuar, por një tjetër kandidat i krahut socialist që mbështetej nga Working Families Party, e njëjta forcë politike që në nëntorin e kaluar kishte mbështetur vetë Mamdanin, si edhe nga shumë drejtues sindikalë.
Megjithatë, Valdez triumfoi me një platformë edhe më radikale, duke premtuar një luftë pa kompromis kundër Izraelit, si edhe një “epokë të re të artë për lëvizjen sindikale”.

Ky zhvendosje majtas tingëllon si një sinjal alarmi për demokratët e moderuar, të cilët druhen se Partia Republikane dhe Donald Trump mund ta shfrytëzojnë këtë situatë në zgjedhjet afatmesme, duke i paraqitur demokratët si një parti jashtë kontrollit.
Drejtimi i ri i demokratëve drejt vitit 2028
Ajo që është e sigurt është se Nju Jorku po tregon drejtimin e ri të Partisë Demokratike, një drejtim që po shpërblehet nga elektorati i majtë në bastionet e saj tradicionale.
Në Queens, për shembull, fitoi Aber Kawas, me origjinë palestineze dhe mbështetëse e ndërprerjes së financimit të asaj që ajo e quan “gjenocidi izraelit në Gaza”.
