The United States will begin a naval blockade of Iran on Tuesday evening, according to a statement from the Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC), which operates under the direction of the US Navy.
According to the announcement, the measure will come into effect at 22:00 (European time) and will extend to all Iranian ports, oil terminals and along the entire coastline of Iran.
The blockade will apply to all ships, regardless of the flag they fly.
"Any vessel deemed to be entering or leaving the blockaded area without authorization will be subject to detention, course diversion, and seizure. Vessels that fail to comply with the order may also be detained with the use of force," the JMIC statement said.
The US center clarified that the free passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz to or from destinations outside Iran will not be impeded.
The announcement comes at the height of tensions between Washington and Tehran, after US President Donald Trump declared that the US would take control of the Strait of Hormuz and proposed imposing a 20% tariff on cargo passing through this strategic maritime corridor.
