In an interview with Euronews Serbia, as Albania enters its second month of daily protests, Prime Minister Edi Rama has chosen to read the events on the country's streets differently. According to him, citizens are not protesting because they are unhappy with the government, but because... they live better and demand even more.
" The protest is something much bigger than the topic itself. It's not just flamingos. It's much more than that. It's a signal that the country has moved to another level, that development has become normal, that people are no longer willing to suffer what is missing ," Rama said in the interview.
According to the Prime Minister, the protests are not a consequence of the crisis, but of the success of his government, as citizens have raised expectations.
" People are becoming less and less tolerant of what is missing. That's why people want more. They want it now. And we can't blame them for that. That's the price we pay for our success. This, in my opinion, is a protest against rising expectations and we have to face it ," he said.
Rama went even further, arguing that the main reason for the protests is precisely the fact that the standard of living has improved.
“ No matter what people call it, no matter how harshly they criticize it in the end, the reason is that people live better. And that is why they want so much more. Normally, poor societies have a very high threshold of tolerance for what they lack. Developed and developing societies have a much lower threshold of what is acceptable. They want what is lacking ,” the prime minister declared.
At the end of the interview, the head of government also focused on the change in mentality between poor and developing societies.
“ Because, once they understand… poor people have a habit of saying: 'It could be worse'. People who are no longer poor always have a tendency to say: 'But it could be much better'. And they are right. It could be much better. The only problem is not to rely on the wrong prescriptions, because then the situation could get much worse ,” Rama concluded.
