According to the newspaper Türkiye, the plan called for the Turkish president to be shot down in the air and his death to be presented as an escape attempt. The allegations are linked to the network of Fethullah Gülen, whom Ankara accuses of organizing the coup.
Ten years after the attempted coup in Turkey, the Türkiye newspaper has published new details about an alleged plot to assassinate President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. According to the report, the plan was drawn up by members of the FETÖ organization, as Turkish authorities refer to the movement of cleric Fethullah Gülen.
The newspaper, citing unidentified sources, claims that the assassination was planned according to a scenario similar to the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in 1981. According to these claims, people were stationed at the scene ready to carry out the attack and not fall alive into the hands of the authorities.
The report adds that the plan was revealed at the last moment, after the Turkish military and intelligence services warned the president about suspicious movements.
Former general Ibrahim Büyükbaş stated that an alternative plan had been drawn up three months before the coup attempt. According to him, if Erdogan were captured in the hotel where he was staying on the night of July 15, 2016, he would be transported by helicopter to an airport, board a pre-prepared plane, and be executed during the flight.
Büyükbaş claims that the version would then be published that the president had attempted to flee the country with gold and millions of dollars, but was killed during a clash with security forces.
The coup attempt of July 15, 2016 remains one of the most significant events in modern Turkish history. Following its failure, the Turkish government launched a wide-ranging purge of the military, judiciary, police, universities, and public administration. Tens of thousands of people were arrested or dismissed from office on charges of links to the Gülen movement.
President Erdogan has repeatedly insisted that FETÖ was the mastermind of the coup and that the Gülen network had infiltrated state institutions for years. Fethullah Gülen, who lived in the United States until his death, as well as his supporters, have repeatedly denied these accusations.
On the other hand, critics of the Turkish government and some international analysts have argued that after the failed coup, Erdogan exploited the situation to crack down on the Gülen movement and consolidate his power through mass purges and constitutional changes. Turkish authorities have rejected these claims, stating that the measures were necessary to protect constitutional order and national security.
