On Thursday evening, Hamas was busy writing a statement praising President Macron. The French president declared that France would officially recognize a Palestinian state, which gave the Islamist terror group great pleasure. In the context of the United Kingdom, some voices are calling for Prime Minister Starmer to follow Macron’s Napoleonic example. If the United Kingdom were to truly recognize a Palestinian state, such a decision would have extremely dangerous consequences not only for Israelis, but also for the West as a whole.
Chief among them would be that Palestinian recognition would be a reward for taking hostages, for raping, for murdering, for burning alive innocent people. Recognizing a Palestinian state in a post-October 7 reality would be nothing less than a reward for terrorism. Few would argue that this impetus for unilateral Palestinian recognition has stemmed from the atrocities that Hamas committed on October 7, the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust. Remember, this impetus for recognition was not on the table on October 6. Make no mistake, Islamist extremists are watching closely, terrorists are watching intently, and the signal they are getting is that their violent tactics are yielding positive results for them in the UK and the West. They say it themselves: Hamas has welcomed the numerous statements coming from London. I am sure similar praise from Hamas would come again if the UK were to recognise a Palestinian state, in the same way the terror group happily congratulated Macron. Recognition would be utter folly, terrorism should be eliminated, not encouraged.
You may ask, what concessions do those calling for recognition demand from the Palestinians in return? Nothing. Our 50 hostages, still languishing in the torture dungeons of Gaza, will not be released. Hamas will continue to be the ruling authority in Gaza. It would truly be a feat of futile diplomacy.
The tragic reality is that Israel does not have, and never has had, a genuine Palestinian partner for peace. Indeed, the history of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process reads as a chronology of missed opportunities for Palestinian statehood due to the phenomenon of Palestinian rejection and refusal to accept the existence of a Jewish state within any borders. And yet, we are repeatedly told that Yasser Arafat’s successor, Mahmoud Abbas, is a credible partner in this regard. How ridiculous. It was less than a year ago that Abbas praised the massacre of October 7.
Furthermore, if Abbas is so pro-democracy, why is he halfway through the 21st year of his four-year term? Mahmoud Abbas has a history of Holocaust denial, blaming Jews for the Holocaust on numerous occasions, including in September 2023 when he said: " Hitler fought European Jews because of their usury, their money deals, it wasn't for anti-Semitism ."
Most disturbing of all, Abbas currently has a policy in place in which the “moderate” Palestinian Authority literally pays salaries to the families of terrorists who kill Israelis. The more Jews killed, the more money they get. The PA’s “Pay to Kill” policy tragically ensures that Palestinian terrorism remains a profitable industry. Recognition of a Palestinian state by Western governments would be a de facto acceptance of “Pay to Kill,” which would decisively move us further away from peace and encourage more killings of Israelis and Jews.
I have wondered what impact such a decision would have, other than the aforementioned encouragement of terror? It would have no positive impact whatsoever in terms of the Middle East, with recognition serving only as an act of grandeur and virtue signaling. Positive progress can only come through bilateral discussions. Useless and unilateral steps that seek to sideline Israel will achieve absolutely nothing, as the reality on the ground will remain the same.
And that reality is that there can be no progress or positive impact on the Israeli-Palestinian context as long as our hostages remain in captivity and Hamas remains in power. By recognising a Palestinian state, the UK would be playing a major card that could win concessions from the Palestinians towards peace for absolutely nothing. It would also signal a significant departure from the US administration’s policy. As US Secretary of State Marco Rubio observed after Macron’s recognition announcement: “This reckless decision only serves Hamas propaganda and sets back peace. It is a slap in the face to the victims of October 7. ”
Ultimately, we need to move beyond empty rhetoric and virtue signaling and consider the practical implications of what people are saying. When people call for the recognition of a Palestinian state, who would they recognize as the Palestinian leadership? Who would they want to govern? Presumably not the chosen genocidal terrorist group, Hamas? So would it then be Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian Authority supporting terror?
Amid such global instability, the last thing the world needs is another failed state like Yemen, Iraq, Lebanon or Libya. We have plenty of them in our region. Corruption, jihadist extremists, power vacuums, radicalism, Iranian meddling, a host of armed terrorist groups, a Palestinian state would have all the ingredients of a state that could fail. Why would a Palestinian state be any different? What would an education system overseen by a Holocaust denier look like? In the post-October 7 reality that Israelis are living in, what security guarantees are we being given for our legitimate concerns?
