The Donald Trump administration's decision to open the way for Saudi Arabia to pursue a nuclear program is not just an energy deal. It's a signal that the rules that have kept the spread of the world's most dangerous technologies in check could be undone for the sake of short-term interests.
For decades, the United States has built its foreign policy on a clear principle: the fewer countries with sensitive nuclear capabilities, the safer the world. Today, this principle seems to be replaced by a different logic: if it is our ally, the risk can be tolerated.
This isn't just hypocrisy. It's playing with fire.
Because history has taught us that nuclear technology never remains just a civilian technology. Any centrifuge that enriches uranium for electricity can, under certain circumstances, become the first link in a military program. It is no coincidence that the world powers have imposed strict restrictions for decades. They are not the product of paranoia, but of experience.
If Saudi Arabia gets this capacity, what's to stop Turkey from asking for the same tomorrow? Or Egypt? Or another regional power that feels it's being left behind?
This is how an arms race usually begins: not with missiles, but with excuses.
The irony is bitter. America has spent years threatening Iran, imposing sanctions, and arguing that uranium enrichment poses a threat to world peace. Today, the same argument is relativized when it comes to a strategic partner.
This double standard convinces no one. On the contrary, it gives Washington's opponents the most powerful propaganda weapon: the accusation that international law is applied according to interest and not principle.
Donald Trump's supporters will say that this is "realpolitik." That if America doesn't do it, China or Russia will. It may be a practical argument. But even the most pragmatic logic doesn't change the fact that every exception sets a precedent, and every precedent weakens the system that was built to contain nuclear proliferation.
A world where more and more states possess sensitive technologies is no longer a safe world. It is a world where a diplomatic crisis, a miscalculation, or an impulsive leader can produce irreversible consequences.
It's not the first time Donald Trump has defied international norms. But when political egos begin to affect the global nuclear balance, the price is not just paid by Americans. It can be paid by all of humanity.
History doesn't judge leaders by the agreements they sign at official ceremonies. It judges them by the consequences they leave behind.
And if this decision becomes the starting point of a new nuclear race in the Middle East, then it will not be remembered as a diplomatic success.
