Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that his country is at a "decisive stage" as the army has begun advancing towards Gaza City as part of a plan to take full control of the territory.
"At the same time, I have ordered negotiations to begin immediately for the release of all our hostages and for the end of the war on terms acceptable to Israel. These two things, the destruction of Hamas and the release of the hostages, go hand in hand," Netanyahu said, without giving further details on the negotiations.
On Tuesday, Israeli officials said they were considering Hamas' response to a proposal for a 60-day ceasefire and the release of half of the hostages still being held in Gaza. One source said an end to the war was conditional on the release of all Israeli hostages.
Egypt and Qatar are acting as mediators, pushing for the resumption of indirect talks on a ceasefire plan backed by the United States.
