Former US President Donald Trump said he would have bombed Moscow in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and attacked Beijing if China invaded Taiwan on his watch.
This statement was made during a fundraising event, the Washington Post reports. The comments surprised some of the donors at the event.
James Gilmore, who served as former President Trump's ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, told reporters in Taiwan earlier this month that Trump is simply trying to get allies to put more emphasis on their defense.
"I believe that President Trump will be supportive of Taiwan when he becomes president. He was in his first term," he said, according to Reuters.
China claims Taiwan as its territory over the objections of the Taiwanese government. The Trump White House supported Taiwan, including arms sales that have continued under the Biden administration.
Trump has rarely mentioned Ukraine in recent months. Last year, he claimed he would "solve" the war in less than a day.
In February, he wrote: "We should never again give money without the expectation of a return, or without 'strings' attached."
In April, he said: “As everyone agrees, the survival and strength of Ukraine should be far more important to Europe than to us, but it is also important to us! MOVE EUROPE!”
Trump praised Chinese leader Xi Jinping back in February. Appearing on Fox News, he was asked if he plans to step up the pressure in the trade war with China that began in his first term.
While he said he is not looking to restart the trade war, he also stated that he would consider imposing tariffs of more than 60 percent.
“Look, I want China to do well, yes. And I really like President Xi, he was a very good friend of mine during my term ," he told Fox.
Earlier this year, Trump said he told European leaders he would tell Russia to do "whatever the hell they want" to countries that don't spend enough on their defense.
During a rally in the Bronx last week, Trump referred to several authoritarian leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying they were "at the top of their game, whether you like it or not." "The world will respect us again" if he is re-elected, he claimed.
The bombshell revelation came in a Washington Post report on Trump's latest fundraising tour, during which he has been testing "the limits of federal campaign finance laws," according to experts.
At a fundraiser in New York earlier this month, Trump told attendees he wanted to hear what was on their minds, hearing opinions about former UN ambassador and eventual Republican challenger Nikki Haley and some issues related to Israel.
Trump has promised tax cuts and other policies that will benefit wealthy donors who attend his fundraisers. The former president surprised even his aides by asking for so much money.
But Trump advisers told the newspaper that the former president often makes similar policy promises to big donors behind closed doors as he does in public, and there is no evidence that a specific promise was linked to a particular donation.
"While Joe Biden's supporters in Hollywood and Silicon Valley are withholding their support for Biden's failed campaign, donors across the country are maximizing their efforts to re-elect President Trump because they understand that we cannot afford four more years of Joe Biden's terrible policies," a Trump spokesman said.
