The race for the leadership of the Democratic Party risks turning into a new political and legal clash, as Ervin Salijanj's candidacy is opposed by party leaders, while in the background there are debates about Sali Berisha's re-nomination.
The Democratic Party is expected to be embroiled in a leadership battle again. Four years ago, there was a strong clash with Lulzim Basha, who fled, returned and started a legal battle over the party's leadership, a battle that ended after several years of court battles.
On May 23, the DP will elect its leader and Sali Berisha seems to be taking care not to have rivals, although he states that with Edi Rama there is no choice and he demands a democratic process.
In addition to Alesia Balliu and Evi Kokalari who have declared that they will be part of the race, Ervin Salianji has announced his candidacy today.
" Yes, I will be running for president of the Democratic Party on May 23. Regardless of the fact that when there are elections, you know, electoral lists are published 6 months in advance and equal opportunity is given, today in the DP there is no clearly defined procedure, but there is only an election date. What determines and divides who the majority supports is determined through the vote, regardless of the fact that politics in general should be maintained as a domain, or territory where the word kept defines politicians. Berisha in 2022, when he returned, said he would defeat Rama, he will not steal the elections, he will win the local elections and so on. All of this has not happened ," declared Salianji.
However, it seems that his entry into the race will put the DP on a collision course. The Secretary General of the DP, Flamur Noka, declared today that his candidacy will not be allowed, as he is not a member of the party.
" In the Democratic Party, all those who meet the conditions have the right to apply to be in the leadership structures. The first condition is to be a member of this party. The gentleman in question is not a member of that party. In the DP there is a statute, there are regulations and the first condition is to be a member ," Noka said in a show.
But Salianji himself reacted to this stance, stating that the DP will not have it easy with him. " Do you take him seriously? I ask serious questions. I am a member of the leadership, the 'hero' or the martyr of free speech, because of the sacrifice, the battles. It would be more honest to say: there will be no elections in the DP, because this is a monarchical party. He cannot determine it for me ," said Salianji.
Asked if there will be a legal battle, he said he will not reveal the steps he will take, although the old scenario will not be repeated.
But the signals are that we may have a legal battle, because of the famous article that Berisha inserted into the statute. Article 48 of the DP statute speaks of the non-re-nomination of the chairman when he led the party in the last elections and lost them. So, based on this article, Berisha cannot re-nomine and under the rug there is talk that there may be a complaint in court to block his candidacy.
