There was a time when Edi Rama was one of the most quoted and promoted politicians in the international media. His communication style, artistic profile and pro-European rhetoric created the image of a modern leader who promised to transform Albania. But politics is not judged by image; it is judged by results.
Today, after more than a decade in power, the debate is no longer about how well the prime minister communicates, but about how well the country is governed. Albania continues to face high emigration, challenges to the rule of law, strong perceptions of corruption, and a deeply polarized political climate. These are not just topics of domestic debate; they have also found their way into the reporting of the media and international organizations.
Long-term power brings a well-known danger in any democracy: the creation of the belief that government and state are the same thing. When decision-making is increasingly concentrated in one person and a narrow political circle, control mechanisms weaken and citizen distrust grows. Democracy is not measured only by elections, but also by the quality of institutions, transparency and the ability to accept criticism.
Another element that has fueled debate is the way major strategic projects have been handled. Instead of serving as examples of transparency and public consultation, some of them have sparked controversy, protests, and questions about the balance between economic development, environmental protection, and public interest. In a democratic state, investments must not only be legally possible; they must also enjoy public trust.
The relationship with the media also remains an important test for any government. Criticism is not the enemy of power; it is a necessary mechanism to hold it accountable. When journalists, civil society, or political opponents are perceived as obstacles rather than part of the democratic debate, the quality of governance is weakened.
No leader remains a "star" of the international media forever. Perception changes when circumstances change and when the challenges of governance become more apparent than the ability to build a political narrative. This is not a peculiarity of Albania, but an unwritten law of democratic politics.
The question today is not whether Edi Rama has been a skilled communicator. That is indisputable. The question is whether communication can replace results. When citizens demand stronger institutions, more transparency, a more competitive economy, and fewer emigrations, the answer cannot be just a good speech.
In the end, political history does not remember leaders for the way they dominated the media cycle. It remembers them for the institutions they built, for the democratic standards they left behind, and for the trust they managed to create among citizens. “Kur qytetarët kërkojnë institucione më të forta, më shumë transparencë, ekonomi më konkurruese dhe më pak largime nga vendi, përgjigjja nuk mund të jetë vetëm një fjalim i mirë”. Jo më të forta! Nuk kemi institucione! Kemi drejtorë që urdhërojnë pa pyetur për ligj e rregulla! Ata drejtojnë korrupsionin thuaj! Ekonomia jonë të jetë më konkuruese! Të duket se ka konkurencë në fushën ekonomike këtu? Këtu fiton më i forti, klienti qeverisë që nuk paguan taksa dhe të rregulltit fundosen në çmime por edhe nga taksat dhe turravrapi i tatimeve. Më pak largime gabim kemi largime masive deri në shpopullim! Kemi transparencë në vendimet qe merr qeveria? Ha ha! Kjo si qeveri klandestine i bën gjerat nën rrogos për tja fsheh publikut! Ka shkelje ligjore, ka klientelizëm që pjell korrupsion!
Perkundrazi miti i tij eshte ngritur ne majat me ta larta. A e pate ate bythin Infantino ne finalen e boterorit qe kishte kopjuar madheshtorin tone nudistin pozdravi Edi Rama. Na kishte veshur kostum blu e atletike te bardha si loloa jone. Edhe ate e perqeshen tere televizionet per atletiket famoze te bardha.
