The Food and Veterinary Agency in Kosovo has banned the import of sheep and goats from the Shkodra and Kukës regions, due to the outbreak of the small cattle plague disease PPR.
This is announced in the press release.
"The Food and Veterinary Agency imposes a temporary ban on the import of small ruminants, sheep and goats, from the Shkodra and Kukës regions in Albania. Following the announcement of the confirmation of the outbreak of PPR disease (Peste des Petits Ruminants) in goats in the Shkodra Region in the Republic of Albania.
"Border authorities will increase control measures at all border points with Albania, in order to prevent the introduction of this disease into the territory of the Republic of Kosovo," the announcement states.
The AUV explains that 'Peste des petits ruminants', commonly known as sheep plague, mainly infects goats and sheep.
"The disease is transmitted mainly through direct contact, the source of infection is the secretions and feces of sick animals. Clinical signs of the disease are: high fever, runny nose, eye inflammation, decreased appetite, diarrhea or death."
"Pest of Small Ruminants is not a zoonotic disease, therefore it is not transmitted to humans and does not pose any risk to public health. The FVA, in cooperation with other authorities, will follow the situation seriously and, in addition to preventive measures, will continuously inform farmers and the public of any changes in the situation," the announcement states.
