Italy appears to have put an end to the dilemma over a new national team coach. According to transfer expert Fabricio Romano, the Italian Football Federation has decided to re-appoint Roberto Mancini, who is expected to replace Gennaro Gattuso.
Only the last details remain to formalize the agreement, while the signing of the contract and the official presentation of the Italian technician are expected in the coming days. For Mancini, it will be a return to the helm of the "Axurre", a team he led from May 2018 to August 2023.
Mancini's first term remains memorable thanks to the historic triumph at EURO 2020, a trophy that Italy lifted in 2021 after a penalty shootout win over England in the Wembley final. However, his tenure was also marked by the great disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, after a surprising defeat to North Macedonia in the play-off semi-finals.
During his time in charge of the Italian national team, Mancini recorded 58 matches, winning 38, drawing 12 and losing only 8. He also set two important records, with 11 consecutive wins and a run of 37 matches without defeat. Under his leadership, Italy scored 126 goals and conceded only 44.
In addition to success in the European Championship, Mancini led Italy to third place twice in the Nations League, while also losing the match against Argentina in the "Finalissima".
Meanwhile, developments in the Italian Federation have been rapid. Just the day before, Paolo Maldini and Leonardo submitted their resignations after president Giovanni Malago decided not to appoint Andrea Pirlo as national team coach. Although there was a preliminary agreement, Pirlo's candidacy was rejected due to his role as an ambassador for a betting company, which made him ineligible for the position.
