Argentina's defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, held at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, has caused a lot of reactions among the "albiceleste" fans. Some of them have even started an online petition, demanding that the match be played again.
The petition, started by Argentine fan Gisela Sanchez on the Change.org platform, asks FIFA to order a replay of the final, won by Spain with Ferran Torres' goal in extra time. So far, the request has collected more than 80,000 signatures.
Sanchez claims that Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić had a "questionable and corrupt" performance, demanding that FIFA analyze some of the decisions made during the match. However, the petition does not present concrete evidence for these accusations, apart from some images shared on social media, which the organizer claims show favoritism towards Spain.
According to FIFA regulations, a match can only be replayed in exceptional cases, such as serious breaches of the competition rules. Examples of such cases could be the use of an ineligible player or external interference that affects the official process of the match before the result is confirmed.
An online petition, despite the large number of signatures, has no sporting or legal power to change the outcome of a completed final.
This is not the first time such a request has appeared in international football. After the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar, where Argentina defeated France, over 200,000 French fans signed a petition to replay the match, objecting to several decisions by Polish referee Shimon Marshiniak.
However, there are rare instances in football history when a match has been replayed. One of them occurred in 2006, when a World Cup qualifier between Uzbekistan and Bahrain was replayed due to a technical error by the referee, rather than due to dissatisfaction with the decisions made during the game.
