Analyst Ben Andoni spoke about former Prime Minister Fatos Nano, who passed away the day before.
Andoni described Nanon as one of the most special figures of the Albanian transition, who, although he did not take politics seriously, deeply understood the reality of the country.
Andoni said that Nano was prime minister during the most difficult moments for Albania.
" Albania was in a very difficult situation at the time, but his position as a liberal and uncompromising one made him stand out from others in politics. Nano never took Albanian politics seriously ," Andoni said.
According to the analyst, Fatos Nano was a well-read man, with a broad cultural horizon, connected to art and literature, who "read in several foreign languages" and had a deep understanding of the Albanian character.
" He understood what many Albanians do not understand even today, that Albanians live a stagnant life, without rules, and find it difficult to build a state with laws, " Andoni emphasized.
Speaking about the period when Nano led the government (2002–2005), Andoni said that it was "one of the most corrupt periods in the country's history," but at the same time a time that showed Nano's indifference to power.
“From 2002 to 2005, Albania was among the most corrupt countries, and this was related to the fact that Nano did not take politics seriously. Berisha’s return to power in 2005 was one of the most extraordinary things that Berisha himself achieved, but also a consequence of Nano’s negligence ,” he added.
The analyst underlined that Nano "understood his time" and "took power calmly", describing him as a politician who came from an Austrian experience and who organized the elections well, but failed to turn power into an instrument of transformation.
