All drivers who own an electric taxi will pay more for the price of the energy they use to charge them starting today, November 1st.
The decision was made by the Energy Regulatory Authority, which set the new price to be paid from November 1 to be 22 lek per kilowatt, up from 14 lek previously. During peak hours, the selling price of electricity for charging electric taxis at charging stations will be 25.3 lek.
Making this decision has made Albania among the first countries in the region to establish a special tariff for this energy category.
"Charging points should be increased and businesses should invest in photovoltaics. The price is not unaffordable, but families should be careful with chargers installed in homes ," said Azmer Dulević, an energy expert.
In the latest analysis, FSHU announced that the costs of transmission, distribution and purchase of electricity have increased significantly as a result of consumption from charging points/stations for electric cars with installed power over 11kW. Analysis which led to this decision.
But for the taxi association, the decision harms operators who use electric vehicles and make up 60% of the active fleet.
"The decision was made without consultation. We have requested its cancellation and if it does not happen, we will pursue all legal avenues, even going on strike ," said Xhevit Bara from the Albanian Taxi Association.
An electric car with a 60 kilowatt-hour battery, which previously cost around 840 lek to charge, will now cost 1,320 lek, and up to 1,518 lek during peak hours.
Currently in the country, by May 2025, the number of registered electric cars reached 8,043. A 26% increase for the first 5 months of the year.
