The Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SCAC) has sentenced the former acting mayor of Tropoja Municipality, Zyra Islamaj, to 2 years and 1 month in prison for passive corruption. However, the sentence will be converted into 2 years of probation, provided that she does not commit another criminal offense during this period.
According to sources, the court has also ruled that Islamaj will not exercise public functions for a period of 5 years.
In the same case, the GJKKO also sentenced builder Rrok Gega to 6 months in prison for active corruption. This sentence was also suspended, being replaced with 1 year of probation.
According to SPAK, the case is related to a tender procedure, where Zyra Islamaj allegedly asked the builder Rrok Gega to build a bridge near her sister's apartment, an intervention that was not foreseen in the initial project.
The Special Prosecution Office claims that Islamaj had personally intervened with the builder and had also engaged the municipality's road maintenance technician to carry out the works.
