"Highly dangerous criminals will come"/Refugee centers in Lezha will

The Italian government has made a 180-degree change of plan with the two migrant centers built in Albania. Initially, these centers were built to house migrants awaiting asylum. But faced with court blockages, the Italian government has decided that the Gjadri and Shëngjin centers will be converted into prisons for the repatriation of illegal migrants.

Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi confirmed a significant reduction in migrant arrivals thanks to prevention policies, highlighting how the Albanian centers of Gjadri and Shëngjin can be used to strengthen the repatriation system.

The minister proposed that these previously unused centers be converted into Repatriation Detention Centers (CPR), thus allowing irregular migrants to return home, without the right to stay in Italy. Piantedosi added that, thanks to the use of CPRs, it would be possible to improve security in Italian cities. Europe, he said, now demands action in this direction.

Piantedosi also highlighted that arrivals have decreased by 17% compared to the same period in 2024, a year that already saw a significant decrease in arrivals. The minister explained that this decrease is the result of efforts against human traffickers, but warned that instability in some countries of departure still requires continued vigilance.

The reconversion of the centers will not require new investments, as the facilities are already equipped with the necessary spaces for repatriations. The Minister also added that the preventive effect will increase with the increase in the number of repatriations, with an increase of 35% compared to the previous year./ Capital
