Businessman Gazmend Haxhia, accused by SPAK of being an accomplice of the former minister in handcuffs, Ilir Beqaj in the case of embezzlement of EU funds, was presented today at the premises of the Special Prosecutor's Office.
Together with the defense lawyer, Haxhia has appeared for the verification of the security measure, as the measure of 'house arrest' has been imposed on him in connection with the SASPAC file. Meanwhile, together with Hoxhajn, the lawyer Henrik Ligori is also with him.
Gazmend Haxhia was detained at noon on July 8 by the police as soon as he got off the plane at Rinas airport. His lawyer Henrik Ligori said that Haxhia surrendered and informed the prosecutor of the case that he would stop his visit to China to face justice.
The Special Prosecutor's Office suspects that Beqaj, as head of SASPAC, has abused at least 8 procurement procedures from the agency for the management of EU funds, inflating the figures to hundreds of thousands of euros to various companies for unfinished services with the former minister himself as the beneficiary.
In a special case, SPAK says that SASPAC gave €125 thousand to the company of businessman Haxhia for organizing a tourism conference and for the same event, the Ministry of Tourism also paid 38.5 million lek. So, out of over €500,000 in tenders - the Prosecutor's Office reveals - ALL 4.2 million were spent on a dinner at "Gzona", which SPAK says is owned by Ilir Beqajt, a business that was used by companies benefiting from the funds to return the money as bribes .
On July 6, in a session of about 6 hours in the Special Court, the security measures against the persons under investigation were reassessed. Ilir Beqaj was left behind bars, despite the fact that he offered 50,000 euros as a guarantee to get his freedom. Even his closest associate, Ermal Kurtulajt, was left in the cell while he offered the money for the sale of an Audi Q7 for the conditional freedom which was denied to him.
Beqaj denied all the accusations, while his lawyer said that SPAK has a personal relationship with the former minister not only to denigrate his figure but also to prevent the former Minister of Health from continuing the battle for the case under investigation of sterilization, a concession for him which there is also a parliamentary investigation
Therefore, Ilir Beqajt SPAK raised the charges of passive corruption, non-declaration and concealment of wealth, fraud, and inequality in tenders. While the other defendants are accused of active and passive corruption as well as fraud.
