Children in Porto Romano are not starting school because they have not been

The 185 students of the 9-year "Met Hasa" school in the Porto Romano area of Durrës have not been to school for two days.

They lack transportation to the host school, so the parents have protested, demanding measures and a solution to the situation without further affecting the education of their children who were unable to enjoy their first day of school. Their school is being rebuilt and classes have been temporarily moved to the “Neim Babameto” school in Spitalë. Last year, a bus was made available to the students, but this school year everything has changed.

"I have two children and we left them at home. It is impossible for a first-grader or a teenager to go to school by urban bus. The child is not safe. We cannot take them ourselves because we are at work," said a resident.

"I have three children. I can't afford to pay for school fees. I'm at work, I can't afford to take them and pick them up. I call on the Ministry of Education to take action as if they were its own children."

"They told us that this year they will go with urban transport, but there is no logic. Why was there transport last year, but not this year? They should have solved it earlier, not before school started," said another.

According to one of the school's teachers, Pjetër Biba, the situation arose as a result of the interruption of service by the transport company, which was not paid for by the Municipality.

"The company that provided transportation last year was not paid and has stopped the service. It should not have been left on the last day. Urban is unsafe even for us adults, let alone for children."

Parents say they will not send their children to school until the problem is resolved. They have warned of escalating their protest, blocking the road, and are demanding the immediate intervention of institutions, especially the Ministry of Education, to restore a service that is essential for the education and safety of their children./TCH
