Thousands of supporters of the socialist opposition arrived in front of the prime minister to protest like today 13 years ago.
The protest was called by the Socialist Party after the publication of a video, where the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the time, Ilir Meta, was accused of discussing a corruption affair, broadcast on the show Fiks Fare on Top Channel. As a result of shooting with firearms by the Guard of the Republic, on January 21, 2011, Ziver Veizi, Hekuran Deda and Faik Myrtaj were killed, and more than 10 other protesters were injured.
Alex Nika, the fourth victim died a few days later, he was shot in the head. Sali Berisha's government immediately after the murders did everything to remove responsibility from itself. The head of the opposition, Edi Rama, did not hesitate to call it a state crime, but until late that night he did not have the golden proof of the fact that it was a murder ordered from within the Prime Minister's building.
13 years later for "Exclusive", journalist Artan Hoxha returns to the same balcony where he stayed on January 21, 2011. He shows the feeling that this event conveys for him.
Artan Hoxha: With the passage of time, this event and especially the way it unfolded, turns into a day of sadness for me. If in the first years I had some kind of professional satisfaction because it was one of those events that you, as a journalist, wish to have once in your life, to have the opportunity. Meanwhile, now after so many years, I try to actually spend the 21st of January early in the morning. I look at those plaques, the only positive thing that has been done. I pass as a kind of consolation to them. I recall the event for a moment, and then later I feel a phase of sadness for the impossibility and powerlessness to give a solution to this event.
At the moment we saw the people who came to help Ziver Veiz, I immediately saw on the Top Channel platform, a person fell to the ground and another person was lying at his feet. Later I recognized that it was the photographer, and later I recognized another protester, Hysni Peposhi, who is now an immigrant in Belgium. He had been together with Hekuran Deda on the platform of Top Channel and he was hit. It wasn't even the first, the projectile went through the hand, between the thumb and index finger of Fatos Mahmutaj and hit him in the head. The crowd at Hekuran Deda was huge. We were able to see who was injured because there were other people injured. Then I saw two more people lying down, the idea was always that they were wounded and the shootings were done selectively to give a final blow to the protest because it was at the end of it.
On that day, God wanted so few to be killed because there were others who narrowly escaped. What makes this event more tragic is the scene of what happened back. All that enterprise of an entire government to put the blame on those four killed. We are removing the part that was the fault of the opposition. But at least for those four victims there should have been justice because they turned out to be people without any past, involved where they could be accused, they were neither militants nor members of a party. They were simply Albanian sympathizers called to a protest, just as they can be called to a protest today.
The 13th commemoration of January 21 finds this issue with a decision of the Strasbourg Court where it asks the Albanian state, "to identify and punish those responsible for the murder of 2011 in front of the Prime Minister". The murder of Alex Nika, still without a perpetrator, is hoped to be solved by a criminal laboratory in Italy.
