This Friday, the 34th anti-government protest is being held in front of the Prime Minister's Office. Activist Sidorela Vatnikaj, in a statement, brought up the concerns raised by the Albanian Helsinki Committee about the disproportionate violence exercised by the police. She demanded an independent investigation and the immediate release of the protesters.
"After yesterday's event, we have prepared a statement. Statement against violence: Protest is a constitutional right, any attempt to intimidate or suppress constitutes a violation of the fundamental right. We condemn the use of gas without warning, the pushing of protesters. AHC monitoring has found an excess of police powers.
"We ask the police to provide explanations and enable an independent investigation for exceeding their powers, every officer must be held accountable. The violence against a protester in Zvërnec was not an isolated case because a group of protesters yesterday faced disproportionate violence. We demand their immediate release, arbitrary detentions and violence cannot be used as a means of intimidation," she said.
