The former Chief of General Staff of the Army, Xhemal Gjunkshi, says that Albania must strengthen its military capacities and military service must be mandatory.
Gjunkshi said that many NATO countries apply compulsory military service and added that people should be trained and educated in the use of protective equipment.
He said military and political leaders should consider reinstating conscription.
"Not only countries bordering Russia, but also us as a sovereign country and as a member of NATO must think about increasing our capacities. In this context, not only in the field of investment and modernization with technology, but also in the field of education.
Because technology is preceded by education. Because people need to be trained, educated, learn the use of protective equipment.
Maybe even go back to compulsory military service. Today we are 100% where the service is not mandatory, but this issue should also be looked at and reconsidered. It is up to the military leaders, but mainly the politicians, to make a decision on this. There are many NATO countries that have mandatory military service by law", said Gjunkshi in Euronews Albania.
