Officer Bexhet Berberi, who was arrested for abuse of duty after the suicide of 31-year-old Ilvi Meta on May 4, 2022 in the premises of the police station in Kavaja, has shown the dynamics of the event, while rejecting the accusations that he is responsible for the death of the young man.
In an interview for "News 24", the policeman showed that at the moment when Ilvi Meta committed the act of suicide, he was not at the police station but on patrol in the city.
"I am responsible for not hitting the judicial police officer and not leaving the premises of the police station, I have done my duty. The opinion is that it was not checked in the second check, where I am not allowed to enter", he said, while throwing accusations at his colleagues.
Bexhet Berberi: At 16:00 the officer informs me to bring him to the office. They informed him of his arrest, the officer checked him in the presence of me and the chief of crimes, he had no illegal items with him. The minutes were written. I took him to the officer, he opened the door and was checked again at the door, because I am not allowed to enter. It was between 16:20 and 19:30 when the incident happened, I was not there, but in the city, I was informed that the incident happened, when I went to the hospital there were no signs of life. The doctor said there are no signs of life. They call me a dereliction of duty on my part.
He was detained at 10:00 in the morning, he was accompanied for verification. He has been fingerprinted for theft. It is not known if it was problematic. He was detained 2-3 times for theft, but was released because he was innocent.
We knew his family, my late brother and Ilvi's father were close friends. They drank coffee, I stayed too. Even his father says that I have nothing to do with you, he tells me "you don't have a relationship, I know, but they have something else".
I have kept him since 14:00, we have done a surface check, then the police officer who is inside. The thought is that it was not checked at the second check, where I am not allowed to enter.
I have the responsibility not to hit the judicial police officer and not to leave the premises of the police station, I have done my duty.
Officer Bexhet Berberi has stated that Ilvi Meta was not wearing sneakers and it is a mystery where he found the shoe laces, rejecting any claim that the young man could have been raped by the officers of the Kavaja police station.
"When I met my colleague, he wanted to hit the wall with his head, 'what happened to me?' His family was notified by the police," he said, adding that he knew the victim's father.
Bexhet Berberi: You have the bathroom attendant, the police officers have moved, they have not seen any good signs in his movements. It has been mounted on the bolier and there is an iron carrier on top, which is visible. He tied it up there and the police officer didn't see it inside.
The officer delivered the service at 7 o'clock, while the other officer who received the service did not go to check the person at all. I suspect he committed the act during shift change.
The police officer was inside and saw him hanging, notified the officer, the latter took the keys and when they opened the door he was tied up.
From 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. that I received the service, he was accompanied to the police station. From 16:00 until the event happened, there was neither food nor cigarettes. The family went at 18:00 to send food. Until that hour he had been without food.
There were no sneakers at all, that is the doubt. He was not mistreated, there were no signs of violence. I knew him as he called me "uncle", I offered him food and he said they treated me unfairly.
