The external threat to Germany is more evident than ever. The alarm was raised by the General of the German army, Michael Giss.
In an interview with the German media, Die Welt, the senior German military officer and chief of staff of the Hamburg command emphasized that the closest military threat to Germany is in five years and the aggressor country is expected to be Russia.
"After the end of the Cold War and the division of Germany, we wanted above all to enjoy the "peace dividend" for 30 years and it seemed that we were "surrounded by friends". In Germany, we are still miles away from the perception of an external danger these days, quite unlike, for example, people in the Baltic states or Poland. But my internal clock as a soldier is ticking and tells me that in five years we will have to be resilient enough to face an external military threat ," said Giss.
After Russia's attack on Ukraine in February 2022, the German Bundeswehr began developing the "Operational Plan Germany" in March 2023, the first version of the secret document, which is about 1,000 pages long, has been available since March 2024. "All of Germany must get ready for war. This is a major overall task for politics, the Bundeswehr, business and society in the broader sense.
