Accused of war crimes, Hague Court signs arrest warrant for Netanyahu
Benjamin Netanyahu

The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who are accused of crimes against humanity.

The move is a dramatic escalation of legal procedures for the war in Gaza and means the 124 member states of the ICC would be forced to arrest Netanyahu and Gallant if they entered their territory.

Today, the court announced that it had unanimously decided to reject Israel's appeal of the ICC's jurisdiction.

She said she had "reasonable grounds" to believe that Netanyahu and Gallant should be held criminally responsible for the war crime.

The ICC said it also had reasonable grounds to believe they had "intentionally and knowingly deprived" Gazan civilians of food, water, medicine, medical supplies and fuel and electricity.

Netanyahu has previously rejected the ICC prosecutor's request for arrest warrants as "absurd, false and a distortion of reality".

Israel has argued that no other democracy has been treated in such a "prejudicial manner" by the ICC and that it remains committed to the rule of law.

this decision is likely to complicate efforts to reach a ceasefire to end the more than a year of war between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

The court also issued an arrest warrant for Hamas leader Mohammed Deif for crimes against humanity and war crimes. Israel said in August that it had killed Deif in an airstrike in Gaza a month earlier. / Taken from the Financial Times , adapted "Pamphlet"
