Obama: Iran ceasefire is good news, but US position has worsened

Former United States President Barack Obama has welcomed the ceasefire between the US and Iran, but has warned that the country could find itself in a less favorable position than before the conflict began.

In an interview with the American network NBC News, Obama said he was "very happy to see a ceasefire," but noted the political, military and financial costs of the latest escalation.

" There was an agreement in place, under which Iran had agreed not to develop nuclear weapons ," Obama declared.

He argued that the US administration's withdrawal from that agreement created opportunities for Iran to expand its nuclear capabilities.

" This administration, or a previous version of it, withdrew from the deal, which allowed Iran to develop more nuclear capability. We fought a war, spent billions of dollars and placed a huge burden on our military ," he said.

President Donald Trump has long been critical of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the 2015 nuclear deal negotiated during the Obama presidency. Trump argued that the agreement did not ultimately prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and decided to withdraw the US from it in 2018, during his first term.

However, a number of foreign policy experts have rejected these criticisms, arguing that the 2015 agreement contained stronger control and verification mechanisms than later proposals for US-Iran relations.
