British withdraw embassy staff from Iran; Geneva talks last chance for

The UK Foreign Office says it is taking the "precautionary step" of withdrawing staff from its embassy in Iran. The decision comes as the exchange of fire between Israel and Iran has intensified.

Earlier, the Israeli military said it struck dozens of targets, including what it called missile production sites in Tehran.

Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of the United Kingdom, France and Germany are holding talks with their Iranian counterparts in Geneva today, as part of efforts to ease the Israel-Iran conflict.

The Geneva talks are seen as a last-ditch effort.

The atmosphere is somber at the luxury hotel in Geneva, where talks between European foreign ministers and their Iranian counterparts are continuing.

Talks can determine the course of an escalating war.

This is the first time Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has met face-to-face with some of his Western counterparts since Israel attacked his country a week ago. Before joining them, he delivered a speech at the UN Human Rights Council.

Israel's ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Daniel Meron, issued a statement expressing his strong objection to Araghchi being given the floor in the council, a minor quibble compared to the major military escalation taking place on the ground in both countries.

These talks in Geneva are seen as a last-ditch effort to find a negotiated solution.

Sources say Iran is being told that its nuclear enrichment must stop completely, a demand it has always rejected, insisting that it violates its right to a peaceful nuclear program.

But this is also an American ultimatum.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy flew to Geneva from Washington with a clear message to convey at the talks.

Tehran may face a difficult choice: maintain its nuclear program or keep America's military power out of this dangerous conflict.
