The UN Security Council has voted against the resolution proposed by the US. About 11 countries voted in favor of the resolution, one country abstained, while three countries voted against, namely Russia, China and Algeria.
Since China and Russia are permanent members of the council, the vote failed.
Russia's UN envoy called on countries not to support the resolution, calling it an empty rhetorical exercise in a fiery speech.
Nebenzya called the resolution too politicized... to establish US ambitions in the region and ensure impunity for Israel, whose crimes are not appreciated in the draft.
" The United States is trying to sell a product - a diluted formulation... of an imperative for a ceasefire ," he added.
Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the UN, blamed Russia and China after the failure of the US resolution on Gaza. She said the US "presented a resolution in good faith".
"Unfortunately, Russia and China decided to exercise their veto. Now Russia and China will give you all kinds of explanations for obstruction. But whether they accept it or not, there are two deeply, deeply cynical reasons behind their votes. Russia and China refuse to condemn Hamas for burning people alive, for killing innocent civilians at a concert, for raping women and girls, for taking hundreds of people hostage.
This was the deadliest single attack on Jews since the Holocaust, and a permanent member of this council cannot even condemn it. It's really scandalous. The second reason behind this veto isn't just cynical, it's also petty. Russia and China simply did not want to vote for a resolution that was written by the United States because they would rather see us fail than see this Council succeed ," she said.
