Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that the United States document on security guarantees for Ukraine is fully prepared and that Kiev is only waiting for confirmation of the date and place for its signing.
The statement was made on Sunday during a press conference in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, where Zelensky also spoke about the limited progress of the recent talks with Russia, held in Abu Dhabi with US mediation, foreign media report.
"For us, security guarantees are above all guarantees from the United States. The document is 100% ready and we are waiting for our partners to confirm the date and place of signing ," Zelensky said.
He added that after signing, the document will be sent for ratification to the US Congress and the Ukrainian parliament.
On Friday and Saturday, Ukrainian and Russian negotiators held their first trilateral meeting in Abu Dhabi, also attended by US representatives, with the aim of discussing Washington's 20-point plan to end the war, which has entered its fourth year. However, the talks did not produce a concrete agreement.
Despite this, both sides expressed their openness to continuing the dialogue, while a US official announced that a new round of talks is expected next Sunday, again in Abu Dhabi.
" The American plan and problematic issues are being discussed. There were many difficult points, but now there are fewer ," Zelensky said.
According to him, Russia is trying to force Ukraine to give up the eastern regions that Moscow has failed to occupy since the start of the full-scale invasion. However, the Ukrainian president stressed that Kiev has not changed its position on preserving the country's territorial integrity.
" These are two fundamentally different positions, that of Ukraine and that of Russia. The Americans are trying to find a compromise," Zelensky said, adding that all sides must be ready for compromise.
