Ukraine has fired UK-made Storm Shadow missiles at Russia for the first time since the conflict began, according to The Guardian.
The decision to approve the strikes came in response to the deployment of more than 10,000 North Korean troops to Russia's border with Ukraine, while UK and US officials warned of an escalation of the nearly three-year-old conflict. .
It was earlier reported that the UK would soon approve Storm Shadow missiles for use inside Russia after US President Joe Biden agreed to do the same for the similar US Atacms weapon.
It was not clear what Ukraine used to target the Storm Shadow missiles. Unconfirmed images shared via the Telegram app appeared to show fragments of the missile at a location in the Kursk region. A weapons expert, Trevor Ball, formerly of the US Army, said the images circulating showed fragments of the storm shadow, although he could verify whether they were current or old photos.
The attack came a day after Ukraine used US-supplied missiles to strike targets in the Bryansk region. Western officials have indicated they are specifically targeting North Korea's buildup in the region as well as infrastructure that could be used for a 50,000-troop offensive against a Ukrainian incursion into the region.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that the use of US- and UK-made missiles within Russia's borders would be tantamount to bringing NATO into direct conflict with Moscow.
