US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said today that the United States has no reason to question the European assessment that Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny was poisoned with a rare toxin.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Bratislava with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Rubio was asked about the recent report published by five European countries (Great Britain, France, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands), which confirms the presence of epibatidine, a toxin from poison dart frogs, in Navalny's body sample, deeming the poisoning as the cause of his death in the Russian penal colony two years ago.
"We are aware of the report. It is a disturbing report. We are aware of the case of Mr. Navalny and certainly... we have no reason to doubt it ," Rubio said.
He added that the US is not objecting to this assessment and will not enter into a debate or conflict with European countries on this issue.
" We're not arguing. We're not going to war with these countries over this. But it was their report and they published it ," he stressed.
Russia has consistently denied any involvement in Navalny's death, claiming he died of natural causes. The European report aims to take the matter to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
