Kremlin critic Vladimir Kara-Murza has been transferred to a prison hospital and his lawyers have been barred from contacting him for two days, his wife said on July 5, expressing fears for the dissident's fate.
Kara-Murza, 42, is serving 25 years in prison for treason and other charges. This is one of the harshest punishments that Moscow has imposed on any opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Twice poisoned in what he describes as attempted assassinations by Russian security services, concerns have grown for Kara-Murza's health since the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalyn in an Arctic prison in February.
"Vladimir Kara-Murza has been transferred to the prison hospital. His lawyers have not been allowed to visit him", said Evgenia Kara-Murza through a post on social networks, adding that there is no information about his condition.
She said her husband was transferred from the IK-6 high-security prison in the Siberian region of Omsk to a prison hospital in the region.
His lawyers have traveled to the prison where he was serving his sentence and have been waiting since Thursday morning to be informed of their client's condition. When they went to the hospital, where he has been transferred, the lawyers were told that Kara-Murza was not there and then the health authorities told them that he was in the hospital, but the visiting hours had ended.
Even on Friday, the hospital staff denied the lawyers access to Kara-Murza, his wife said.
Kara-Murza, who has a Russian and British passport, was first arrested in April 2022, after returning from abroad. He was charged with disobeying a police officer, and authorities later brought charges of discrediting the Russian military and treason over comments he made about Kremlin policies.
In April 2023, he was found guilty of all charges and sentenced to 25 years in prison./REL
