The Americans and their British allies sabotaged the negotiations, believing it was too early to end the war.
New evidence sheds light on the breakdown of peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in the spring of 2022, when a ceasefire seemed almost a done deal. Jean-Daniel Ruch, then Switzerland's ambassador to Turkey, confirmed that the United States and the United Kingdom, with Boris Johnson's Conservative government playing a central role, sabotaged the Istanbul talks, motivated by the aim of "weakening Russia".
According to Ruch, and as already reported by other diplomatic sources, in March 2022, 6 weeks after the start of full-scale war between the two countries, the parties were very close to a peace agreement.
Ukraine was ready to give up NATO membership, maintaining its neutrality, in exchange for keeping most of its territory, except for Crimea. The negotiations were supported by Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
But as the former Swiss ambassador says "the Americans and their British allies sabotaged the negotiations", believing that it was "too early to end the war".
A decision, labeled as "extremely immoral" by Ruch, and which had devastating consequences. "It was clear that the continuation of the conflict would lead to an escalation, with a number of victims that would reach at least tens, if not hundreds of thousands," he said.
Evidence confirming the negative role of the USA and Great Britain
On April 9, 2022, Boris Johnson arrived in Kiev on an unscheduled visit. According to some sources, the then British Prime Minister asked Ukrainian President Zelensky not to accept compromises with Moscow. The visit was seen as a direct intervention to block any possibility of a deal, strengthening the hard line against Russia.
Other experts and diplomats have confirmed the central role of "BoJo" in the interruption of talks between Russia and Ukraine. This includes Michael von der Schulenburg, former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations.
He has emphasized on several occasions that the agreement was inevitable, and that the failure of the talks was orchestrated for geopolitical reasons. This is also the opinion of Hajo Funke, professor of political science at the Freie Universität in Berlin, who has described in detail how Western pressure played a decisive role in the breakdown of the negotiations.
This thesis is also confirmed by Harald Kujat, former commander of the German Armed Forces and NATO, who emphasizes that the abandonment of negotiations constitutes a disaster for European security and a betrayal of Ukraine. Then there is the testimony of Ukrainian ambassador Oleksandr Chalyi, who during a public event in Geneva, Switzerland, recalled how Kiev and Moscow were "close to ending the war with a peaceful solution".
Vladimir Putin himself has stated that he "tried to do everything possible to conclude an agreement with Ukraine" and "really wanted to reach a peaceful solution". And in Istanbul both sides "managed to find a real compromise".
As Davyd Arakhamia, one of the main advisers of the Ukrainian leader, later said: "After our return from Istanbul, Boris Johnson visited Kiev, and told us that we should not sign anything with the Russians and continue to fight!".
During his visit to Ukraine, Johnson declared: "Putin is a war criminal, he must be put under pressure!" And 3 days after the then British Prime Minister left Kiev, Putin publicly announced that talks with Ukraine had been abruptly terminated. Apparently something had happened, as confirmed by government sources.
Testimony of the former Israeli Prime Minister
As if this were not enough, former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has revealed in an interview published on his YouTube channel that the United States and its Western allies "blocked" his efforts to mediate between Russia and Ukraine in the stages of early in the conflict.
On March 5, 2022, Bennett traveled to Moscow to meet with President Vladimir Putin. In the interview, he described the mediation efforts he led between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, noting how those efforts were coordinated with the United States, France, Germany and the United Kingdom.
According to Bennett, both sides had agreed to significant concessions. The Russian side eliminated the demand for "denazification" as a condition for a cease-fire, which, according to Bennett, meant the removal of Zelensky from power. During the meeting in Moscow, Putin assured Bennett that he would not attempt to kill the Ukrainian president.
Lack of agreement
On March 29, 2022, during a meeting in Istanbul, Ukraine and Russia were very close to a peace agreement, which would culminate in a joint declaration. The draft agreement, seen by "Foreign Policy" experts, envisioned a "neutral and non-nuclear Ukraine, committed to giving up military alliances and the presence of foreign bases or troops on its territory.
Ukraine's security guarantors included the permanent members of the UN Security Council (including Russia), along with Canada, Germany, Israel, Italy, Poland and Turkey. The guarantors would provide assistance in the event of an attack on Ukraine, including measures such as establishing a no-fly zone and direct interventions on the ground.
The agreement also provided for diplomatic support for Ukraine's membership in the European Union. But despite that progress, the deal fell through. And thanks to another testimony, today we know the reasons./ Adapted "Pamphlet" from "Il Giornale"
