Cybercriminals are always looking for new ways to access phones and get personal data, steal or extort money.
The Dutch National Police warns of one of the common tactics used by cybercrime and gives recommendations on what to do if you fall victim to this type of online fraud.
If your mobile phone starts behaving strangely, for example you can't connect to the internet or make calls, you may be the victim of an online scam. In such a case, it is better to check your bank account immediately because cybercriminals may try to steal your money.
According to the National Police, "SIM card cloning is one of the most common forms of cyber fraud".
The National Police reports that cybercriminals obtain personal information using various techniques, such as phishing, phishing or social media monitoring. With these methods they manage to copy the SIM card and install it on another device.
Once digital fraudsters gain access and control over a mobile phone number, they can steal all sensitive information such as passwords and access to online banking services. With this check, they can make transfers to the accounts of the criminal organization or even apply directly for loans, warns the National Police.
But how can you know that you are a victim?
Cybercriminals pose as SEPEs to gain access to their victims' personal and banking information.
The first major sign that you might be a victim of this type of scam is that you won't be able to make calls or send text messages while sim cloning. This happens when fraudsters have disabled your SIM and are using your phone number.
You may find out that you are a victim when your phone provider notifies you that your SIM card or phone has been activated on another device, ie. alert you to activities elsewhere.
If your login details no longer work for your bank and credit card accounts and you can no longer access them, you should contact your bank immediately to check that you have not been a victim of fraud.
