Former President Donald Trump will appear in Miami federal court this Tuesday afternoon for an unprecedented and historic court appearance as the first former president to face federal charges in US history.
Trump is expected to be taken into custody and arrested by US Marshals and will appear in court at 3:00 p.m. local time.
Court proceedings will be largely routine, while multiple police forces are preparing for large protests outside the courthouse in Miami. Trump is expected to speak Tuesday evening after returning to his vacation home in Bedminster, New Jersey.
What's expected to happen when Trump gets to court:
Once inside the building, Trump will be arrested, then deputy US Marshals are expected to electronically fingerprint Trump
Trump and his lawyers will then appear before Magistrate Judge Jonathan Goodman to hear the charge. The magistrate judge will confirm with Trump that he understands his rights under the Sixth Amendment, including his right to a speedy trial.
Trump's lawyers are likely to waive the formal reading of the indictment, and the former president is expected to plead not guilty to all 37 charges. Federal prosecutors are expected to ask the magistrate judge to limit Trump's communications with any potential witnesses to protect against witness tampering.
Future hearings will be held before Judge Alieen Cannon, who is assigned to the upcoming criminal case, and a preliminary hearing before Cannon may be scheduled during this initial appearance.
Unlike his New York arraignment, Trump likely won't be seen entering or leaving the Miami courthouse on Tuesday. Former Miami Police Chief Jorge Colina told CNN on Monday that the courthouse has an underground garage that Trump's motorcade will likely use.
