Prince William, the traumas and crises that shaped the future king

He was just 15 years old when his mother, Princess Diana, died in a car crash in Paris while trying to escape the paparazzi. This traumatic experience, combined with recent family crises, is the focus of the new three-part documentary, "William - The Fatal Years of an Heir to the Throne," which is being broadcast on the ARD platform.

The documentary, directed by Claire Walding and Andreas Fauser, examines how losses, media pressure and the weight of the crown have shaped the character of Prince William, now 43.

There was a time when the atmosphere at Buckingham Palace was quite different. In the spring of 2011, William's marriage to Kate Middleton captivated public opinion and breathed new life into the British monarchy, which at the time was facing criticism and loss of popularity.

Fifteen years later, the glow of those days has been dimmed by a series of heavy blows: Prince Harry's departure from royal duties, the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and the almost simultaneous cancer diagnoses of King Charles III and Princess Kate.

"We have placed Prince William on the 'psychologist's couch,'" the documentary's authors explain. "Not to make a diagnosis, but to understand the traces left by a life marked from an early age by loss, separation and high expectations."

The documentary recalls that during the 1990s, the media mercilessly exploited Charles and Diana's divorce. During that difficult period, the teenage William became his mother's closest confidant and main confidant.

"He knew exactly what was going on in her turbulent and complicated life," says former BBC correspondent Wesley Kerr.

The experience of constant paparazzi stalking, which Kate Middleton later also experienced, explains William's current attitude, according to the documentary. The heir to the throne prefers to publish content on the family's social networks himself, often through photos taken by Kate, keeping the media as far away as possible from the private lives of their three children, George, Charlotte and Louis.

From the second episode onwards, Kate Middleton appears as a central figure in the documentary. Beyond her role as William's biggest support in his personal life, she is described by former ARD London correspondent Annette Dittert as Britain's "secret diplomatic weapon".

An example is the official visit of Donald Trump, who was impressed by the grandeur of the royal palace, while Kate had an important role in his reception at Windsor Castle.

"There is no King William without Queen Kate. She is his lightning rod, she is the gold dust of the palace," says historian Tessa Dunlop, hinting that the upcoming historical documentary series could be entirely dedicated to the future queen of Great Britain.
