"Invasion" of Kursk by Ukraine, what is Putin's plan to take

Antonov also warned that the US will at some point remove all restrictions on the use of weapons supplied to Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has formulated a response to the ongoing Ukrainian incursion into the Kursk region and those responsible for the attack on Russia will be punished, Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov said.

"I tell you honestly that the president has made a decision. I am fully convinced that everyone will be severely punished for what happened in the Kursk region," state news agency TASS quoted Antonov as saying late Thursday.

The remarks by Antonov, who did not elaborate further on Putin's plans, came after the Kremlin leader held a meeting on Thursday with top officials, including governors of border regions, more than two weeks after Ukraine launched its blitzkrieg, the latest incursion major in Russia by a foreign power since World War II.

Antonov, who has served in his post since 2017, also warned in comments published by the state news agency RIA that the US will at some point lift all restrictions on the use of weapons supplied to Ukraine.

"The current administration is behaving like a person who holds out one hand and holds a dagger in the back with the other," Antonov said, describing Washington's recent comments about not allowing Kiev to use US weapons for strikes deep into Russian territory as "striking".

"They are basically setting the stage (for a decision) to remove all existing restrictions at a certain point, without thinking too much," he said.

The United States has provided Ukraine with more than $55 billion in military aid since 2022, but has limited the use of its weapons on Ukrainian soil and counter-fire, cross-border defense operations.

Kyiv has said it used US-made weapons in Kursk, including cruise bombs and HIMARS missile systems.

Washington has not commented directly on the use of US-made weapons in the Kursk region, but has said that US policies have not changed and that Ukraine is defending itself against Russian aggression.
