In Anchorage, Alaska, the summit day started early for the world's media. Journalists gathered at 6:00 a.m. in the parking lot of a pet store, from where they were transported in old buses to Elmendorf Air Force Base, where the meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin is expected to take place.
Security checks are extremely strict, with every electronic device, from cameras to laptops, having to be turned on for verification. Among the journalists are also representatives of the Russian media, who arrived yesterday from Moscow. One of them said that before departure, everyone underwent two negative tests for COVID-19, as is usually required in Russia before being in the same room with Putin.
In contrast, neither American journalists nor others present have been required to take tests. This change in protocol could mean that the promised joint press conference after the summit may not take place at all, if Putin decides to speak only to his media to “cleanse” himself of COVID.
Everything will be clarified after the meeting, but this situation adds another question mark to a summit already filled with tensions and high expectations.
