Like Silicon Valley's high-tech guns, it's back in the game

The war in Ukraine has given new impetus to the private "smart" weapons industry, a sector run by high-tech companies, almost all of them in Silicon Valley. The first to notice were the big private investors. From 2019 to 2022, venture capital flows into the sector doubled, from $16 billion to $33 billion.

However, a host of new businesses in Silicon Valley specializing in technological warfare have not yet begun to freely use the stratospheric budget of the US Department of Defense: 886 billion dollars a year, the main beneficiaries of which remain historical companies such as Lockheed Martin and Boeing .

The reason is clear: the US military procurement system is outdated and needs to be modernized. On average, it takes a firm two years to get on the Pentagon's shortlist of private companies with a sale proposal.

So much so that, to speed up the process, the Biden administration has created committees of scientists, entrepreneurs, military personnel and bureaucrats specializing in military technology.

Weapons are definitely one of the sectors that is changing radically due to high technology, while artificial intelligence is constantly reshaping their use.

The Chinese have been aware of this for some time, and in fact for years Beijing has been at the forefront of the process of modernizing its war arsenal, thanks also to a much more efficient and less bureaucratic procurement system than the American one.

Now the war in Ukraine has offered the United States an opportunity to begin its comeback, an effort and a cost that, before the Russian invasion, public opinion would hardly have readily accepted. / il venerdi – bota.al
