US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent states that the escalation of the situation does not preclude efforts to reduce tensions, commenting on recent developments in the Middle East and the role of the Trump administration.
Bessent was asked whether President Donald Trump is trying to end the war or escalate it, at a time when the US is reportedly increasing its military presence in the region, including attack ships and additional troops.
"They are not mutually exclusive. Sometimes you have to escalate the situation to reduce tensions," he said.
Bessent declined to provide details on military plans, but stressed that the US administration is keeping all options open.
"As President Trump always does, he is leaving all options on the table," he said, also referring to the possibility of further action on Kharg Island.
The Persian Gulf island is a key hub for Iranian oil exports, through which most of the country's supplies pass. It was partially hit in a reported operation on March 13, while oil export facilities remained intact.
Trump has warned that this approach could change if Iran interferes with the free passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic route that Tehran uses as a tool of pressure.
