Moscow claims to have shot down over 140 drones, while Kiev says it targeted military facilities and Russian fleet infrastructure...
Ukraine carried out one of the largest drone attacks since the start of the war, hitting the wider St. Petersburg region. Russian authorities described the operation as "unprecedented".
According to Moscow, air defenses shot down more than 140 Ukrainian drones over the Leningrad region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attacks targeted Russian military facilities and naval infrastructure.
The attack occurred on the final day of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russia's most important economic event, attended by thousands of representatives from over 130 countries.
The governor of the Leningrad region, Alexander Drozhdenko, said a fire broke out at a military facility after the attack, without giving the exact location. Authorities evacuated some residents as a precaution, while reporting limited damage to buildings.
For the first time since the start of the war, St. Petersburg governor Alexander Beglov called on citizens to stay at home, while authorities imposed a high state of alert.
It is time to end this war. But Russia's ruler wants to keep fighting. That is why Ukrainian sanctions against this aggression are working. Zelensky said Ukrainian drones traveled about 1,000 kilometers to strike "enemy naval arsenals and a base in Kronstadt," which serves as the main base of Russia's Baltic Fleet.
The Ukrainian president called the operation a "just response" to Russian attacks on Ukraine. He added that an oil depot in the Krasnodar region, about 500 kilometers away, was also hit.
The Ukrainian armed forces announced that they struck an oil depot and terminal in the Leningrad region overnight.
The escalation comes a day after a clash between Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin over the possibility of direct talks. Zelensky called for a ceasefire and a high-level meeting with Putin, saying "the time has come for the war to end."
Putin, speaking at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum, rejected the demand. He reiterated that any ceasefire would give Ukraine time to reorganize militarily and said the war would only end when Russia achieved its objectives.
According to analysts, Ukraine has increased attacks on Russian energy and military infrastructure in recent months, taking advantage of the rapid development of the domestic drone industry. Since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022, Kiev has invested significantly in the production of unmanned aerial vehicles and is now able to strike targets deep inside Russian territory.
Go go go russia down!
