The death toll from the two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 continues to mount. According to the latest data released by the authorities, the death toll has reached 4,490, while 16,740 people are injured.
The government has not yet given an official figure for the number of missing people. However, after the tragedy, the United Nations (UN) warned that their number could reach up to 50,000.
The two earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, struck the country just 39 seconds apart, causing extensive damage, especially in northern Venezuela, in the capital Caracas and surrounding areas, as well as in the neighboring state of La Huira.
Thousands of residents affected by the disaster continue to live in temporary camps, while rescue teams from Venezuela and other countries continue operations to extract bodies from the rubble.
According to authorities, over 850 buildings have suffered damage, while 190 of them have completely collapsed.
