He killed the former Ukrainian parliament speaker, the author testifies: I did

A 52-year-old man who murdered a former Ukrainian parliament speaker has pleaded guilty. He says he did not cooperate with Russian special forces but carried out the act in revenge against authorities after the loss of his son in the war.

The suspect in the murder of Ukrainian lawmaker Andriy Parubiy has pleaded guilty to the shooting that took the politician's life, claiming he committed the crime in revenge against the country's authorities.

Parubiy, a nationalist politician who previously served as speaker of Ukraine's parliament, was the victim of a carefully planned attack in the western city of Lviv on Saturday.

"Yes, I admit that I killed him," said the 52-year-old, whose name has not been released by police, denying that he had collaborated with any Russian special services.

After shooting Parubiy, the suspect fled into the forest, where he burned the clothes he was wearing and dismantled the bicycle he was riding, the Lviv Regional Prosecutor's Office said.

He has been remanded in custody for 60 days while investigations continue to determine whether he worked alone as he claims or not.

The suspect told reporters that he would like a decision to be made quickly so that he could be exchanged for his son's body.

The son was a junior sergeant in the Ukrainian armed forces who was killed in combat, according to the suspect's ex-wife, Olena Cherninka.

"My son was a hero who died for Ukraine," Cherninka wrote in a Facebook post, claiming she raised the boy, named Mykhailo-Victor, alone, with very little input from his father.

Parubiy had previously been active in Ukrainian politics since 1990, as the Soviet Union was disintegrating. He co-founded the Social-Nationalist Party of Ukraine in 1991, although he later left the group and served as a member of parliament from 2007 until his death.
